The deadline to file ITRs without penalty for the FY 2024-25 is September

The Income Tax Department announced on Monday (September 15, 2025) that over 7 crore income tax returns have been filed so far, even as the filing deadline approaches and users continue to report portal glitches while urging an extension.

Despite repeated appeals, the department has given no indication of extending the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for individuals, HUFs, and others not required to have their accounts audited for the financial year 2024-25 (AY 2025-26).

Over 7 crore ITRs have been filed as of September 15 and the number is still rising,” the department said in a post on X, urging those who have not yet filed their returns for AY 2025-26 to do so.

The deadline to file ITRs without penalty for income earned in the 2024-25 fiscal is September 15. In comparison, 7.28 crore returns were filed by the July 31 due date last year.
