From AI-powered smart speakers to futuristic eyewear, OpenAI could soon bring its technology directly into the hands—and onto the bodies—of everyday users.
Smart Wearables Inspired by Humane AI Pin
Reports suggest that OpenAI is developing smart wearables, including a device similar to the Humane AI Pin. These products aim to make AI more personal and accessible, allowing people to interact hands-free and get real-time assistance without relying on a phone or computer.
Devices Expected by Late 2026 or Early 2027
According to insiders, OpenAI’s first hardware devices could launch as early as late 2026 or early 2027. This would mark a big shift for the company, taking it beyond AI software and positioning it directly against consumer tech giants like Apple and Google.
Partnerships With Apple’s Suppliers
A few months ago, OpenAI acquired io Products, an AI hardware startup co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Since then, new reports have revealed that OpenAI may be working on a screenless smart speaker, smart glasses, a digital voice recorder, and even a Humane-like AI pin.
To build these, OpenAI has reportedly partnered with Luxshare and Goertek—suppliers that already manufacture components for Apple devices like iPhones, AirPods, and HomePods. These products are expected to carry OpenAI’s branding once released.
From Pocket Device to AI Glasses
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had earlier hinted at a pocket-sized, screenless AI device that understands context. However, newer reports suggest other form factors are also being explored, including AI-powered eyewear.
Interestingly, earlier rumors about in-ear devices like earbuds appear to be off the table. What’s more, OpenAI has reportedly begun using Apple’s supply chain in China, leading Apple to cancel a meeting with its suppliers to stop OpenAI from poaching talent.
Apple Talent Moving to OpenAI
In recent months, several Apple employees from its AI division have joined OpenAI. Notably, Tang Tan, Apple’s former design head, has become OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer.
Despite these big hires, OpenAI hasn’t shown any prototypes or pricing details for its upcoming devices yet. Still, with former Apple designers now on board, it’s likely the company’s debut hardware could draw inspiration from Apple’s sleek design philosophy while introducing groundbreaking AI features.
