The impact of AI chatbots on teenagers’ mental health has become a growing concern. In response, OpenAI is developing a special teen-friendly version of ChatGPT, set to launch later this year, designed to provide a safer online experience for young users.
What’s New in ChatGPT’s Teen Mode?
OpenAI’s teen version of ChatGPT includes several new safety measures:
- Stricter content filters block conversations about flirting or self-harm, even in creative or fictional contexts.
- Crisis response system can alert parents or, in emergencies, contact authorities if a teen expresses thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
- Parental controls allow parents to link accounts for children under 13, set “blackout hours” when the app cannot be used, manage features like memory and chat history, and guide how ChatGPT interacts with their teens.
- Additional features include in-app reminders during long sessions to encourage healthy usage habits.
Age Verification and Teen Safety
OpenAI will use age-detection technology to keep users under 18 out of the standard ChatGPT version. If the system cannot reliably verify a user’s age, ChatGPT will automatically switch to teen-safe mode for extra protection.
This move comes amid concerns about the influence of AI on young people’s mental health and follows a lawsuit in the US, where a family claimed that the lack of safety measures in the AI chatbot contributed to their teenage son’s tragic suicide.
Balancing Privacy, Freedom, and Safety
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stressed the need to strike a balance between privacy, freedom, and safety. While adults will have more freedom and fewer restrictions, children will receive extra protection, even if it requires verifying their age.
The company is also developing advanced security measures to ensure user data remains private, even from OpenAI employees, except in cases needed to prevent serious misuse or risks. Altman compared this to sensitive professional advice: “If you speak to a doctor about your medical history or a lawyer about a legal matter, that information deserves higher protection. We apply the same principle to sensitive user data.”
Working With Experts
To make this rollout effective, OpenAI is collaborating with child safety experts, advocacy groups, and policymakers to ensure teens get the best possible protection while using ChatGPT.
