Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk has been detained just days after violent protests in Leh, where demonstrators demanded statehood for Ladakh. The crackdown follows the Centre revoking the FCRA licence of Wangchuk’s NGO. At least four youths were killed in police firing during the unrest, and over 50 people have been detained as police and paramilitary forces strictly enforced curfew across the region.In response to the escalating crisis, the Centre has dispatched a special envoy to Leh. Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta chaired a high-level security meeting attended by Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal, DGP S D Singh Jamwal, and senior officials from the Army and ITBP, calling for heightened vigilance to maintain peace.

Wangchuk, who recently ended a 15-day hunger strike, had emerged as a central figure in the protest movement. The Centre, while blaming him for fueling the violence, has maintained that ongoing talks through the High-Powered Committee (HPC) remain the appropriate platform for addressing Ladakhi concerns.In response to the growing unrest, New Delhi dispatched a special envoy to Leh on Thursday in an effort to defuse tensions. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta chaired a high-level security review meeting attended by Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal, DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal, and senior officials from the Army and ITBP, urging heightened vigilance to maintain order.
