National Geographic Features India’s Rare Black Tiger on October 2025 CoverFor its October 2025 edition, National Geographic has chosen a striking cover image from India—a rare black tiger from Odisha’s Similipal National Park, captured by photographer Prasenjeet Yadav.

India’s rare black tiger makes National Geographic cover debut

The image is not only visually captivating but also the result of months of perseverance, as Yadav followed the elusive big cat through Similipal’s dense forests. Unlike typical tigers, black tigers—scientifically known as pseudo-melanistic tigers—bear striking, overlapping stripes that create their rare, dark appearance

What makes the photograph even more remarkable is Yadav’s success in spotting such a rare subject. Black tigers exist only in Similipal, where nearly half of the reserve’s 30 tigers carry the rare genetic mutation that gives them their distinctive coat.
