Tata Motors has announced a major leadership reshuffle, appointing Shailesh Chandra as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). His appointment, effective October 1, 2025, will be for a three-year term.
Chandra, who currently heads Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, will continue to oversee the company’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary. His elevation comes after P.B. Balaji resigned as Group CEO to take over as the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Automotive in the UK, starting the same day.
Restructuring of Tata Motors’ Businesses
Tata Motors is reorganizing its operations into two separate entities:
Commercial Vehicles Business: Will be housed under a new entity called TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd.
Passenger Vehicles & EV Business: Will include passenger vehicles (PV), electric vehicles (EV), Jaguar Land Rover, and related investments.
The board has also appointed Girish Wagh as Managing Director & CEO of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd., effective October 1, 2025.
New Board Appointments
Alongside Chandra and Wagh’s elevation, Tata Motors announced several board-level changes:
Sudha Krishnan has been named as Independent Director for a five-year term beginning October 1, 2025.
Hanne Sorensen will continue as a director on the JLR Automotive Plc board in the UK.
Kosaraju Veerayya Chowdary and Guenter Karl Butschek will join the board of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd.
Chandra’s Career Journey
Shailesh Chandra joined Tata Motors in 2016 as Head of Corporate Strategy and Business Transformation. He later took charge as President of the Electric Mobility Business. Prior to this, he worked with Tata Sons Limited in the Group Chairman’s Office between 2013 and 2016.
Currently, he also serves as a Non-Executive Director on the boards of Tata Technologies Limited, Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited, and foreign subsidiaries such as Trilix S.r.l., Italy and Tata Motors Design Tech Centre Plc, UK.
Chandra holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and an Executive MBA from S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research.
