Democrats issued a broad critique of Trump’s foreign policy, targeting both his approach to the war in Ukraine and his economic actions against U.S. allies.
On Monday (September 15, 2025), three senior Democratic lawmakers accused President Donald Trump of undermining U.S. national security by pushing allies like India closer to Russia and China, while strengthening authoritarian leaders from Moscow to Pyongyang.
“President Trump is jeopardizing our national security and making the world more dangerous,” the lawmakers said in a statement, adding that “he continues to show weakness and ineffectiveness both at home and abroad.”
The statement was issued by Representatives Gregory W. Meeks of New York, Adam Smith of Washington, and Jim Himes of Connecticut — the top Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, and Intelligence Committees.
Collectively, they delivered a broad rebuke of Mr. Trump’s foreign policy record, criticizing everything from his handling of the war in Ukraine to his economic actions toward U.S. partners.
One of their strongest criticisms focused on the President’s tariffs on allies like India, which they warned were “pushing India and other nations into the waiting arms of Russia, China, and North Korea.”
A Warm Welcome for Putin
The Democrats cited Mr. Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin as symbolic of his foreign policy. “From literally laying out the red carpet for Vladimir Putin at a disastrous summit to imposing steep tariffs on allies and partners … he is weakening America, not strengthening it,” they said.
They further accused Mr. Trump of echoing Kremlin rhetoric. “Since the beginning of his administration, Donald Trump has repeated Mr. Putin’s claims, blaming President Zelenskyy and Ukraine for Russia’s unlawful and brutal invasion,” the lawmakers wrote.
They argued that the consequences are already evident. With U.S. commitment to European defense in doubt, Russia has “intensified its aggression, most recently deploying drones into Polish airspace and signaling a dangerous escalation in its bid to rebuild the Russian empire.”
Unauthorized Military Strikes
The lawmakers detailed a series of actions they labeled unconstitutional and reckless. They cited Mr. Trump’s order to carry out a lethal strike on a speedboat off Venezuela’s coast “without authorization for the use of force,” as well as an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities “without congressional approval or a strategy to prevent future nuclear development.”
